South Theatre, Jerash Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Undoubtedly Jerash’s most striking monument, the theatre was built in the early 2C. Its cavea is divided into two blocks of tiered seating, 29 rows deep. The seats were numbered, using Greek lettering (still visible at either end of the bottom rows). Part of the proscenium wall remains. From the promenade gallery there is a view of the town wall curving round the semi-circle of the theatre and beyond over the hilly countryside. Each July the theatre is the backdrop for a folklore festival.
