The Bimaristan Arghoun (note that it is customary to tip the caretaker) was founded by Mamluk governor Arghoun al-Kamili as a hospital and asylum. Built in 1354, this unusual building stands on the site of an ancient palace. The visit is a poignant one, evoking the plight of the mad inmates formerly incarcerated in its narrow vaulted corridors and tiny inner courtyards.
