Great Mosque, Aleppo
: Michelin's recommendations
The Great Mosque of Aleppo was founded around 715, towards the end of the reign of Umayyad caliph Al-Walid I, and rebuilt by Nureddin after a fire in 1169, seemingly in keeping with the original plan. Around a large courtyard of polychrome tiles are three ranges of arcades. Several doorways give direct access to the souk. The south wing houses the prayer hall. Inside, note the exceptional late-13C wood minbar. The minaret (1095) is a Seljuk masterpiece; four different registers rise to a height of 50m.
