This thoroughly authentic provincial town grew up on the banks of the Euphrates. It has picturesque souks, which come alive early each day as local farmers arrive to sell their produce. Bedouin also come to stock up on supplies. The ensemble makes up a striking tableau of colours on account of the variety of traditional costumes. Archaeology buffs will find the town museum of interest, not to mention the two nearby sites of Mari and Dura-Europos.
