The site owes much to its setting, even more so than at Palmyra. In an open location facing Jebel Ansariyeh’s steep flanks stands a row of columns marking the main thoroughfare of ancient Apamea. The extent of the town is evident. Visitors can examine vestiges of important buildings which have been reconstructed: a nymphaeum, an agora, baths. Floors of excavated basilicas have revealed fine mosaics, on show nearby in the attractive caravanserai at the foot of the medieval citadel of Qalaat al-Moudiq.
