Mausoleum of Saladin Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
The mausoleum of Saladin, the Crusaders' greatest adversary, stands just behind the Great Mosque, in the fountain courtyard of the old Aziziyah madrasa. The tomb escaped destruction thanks to the intervention of Kaiser Willhelm II (Germany exercised considerable influence over the Ottoman Empire in the late 19C). Saladin's remains now lie in an ostentatious white marble tomb. The fine original wooden tomb stands alongside, bearing an attractive kufic inscription. The earthenware wall tiling dates from the 17C.
