The huge metropolis of Bangkok is fascinating for its mix of the traditional and the modern. On the western bank of the River Chao Phraya, the Thonburi district, criss-crossed by a maze of khlong (canals), seems to have changed little over the centuries, with its floating markets and houses on stilts.
