The Royal Grand Palace is an astonishing 60-acre Bangkok landmark featuring spectacular Thai architecture with temples and pagodas, and the magnificent Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Begun in 1782, the Royal Grand Palace is Bangkok's most famous landmark and represents a three-dimensional textbook of Thai decorative techniques. You'll see proud golden domes, inspirational spires, mosaics of glass or porcelain, exotic wall murals, richly carved and gilded roof supports, doors and windows adorned with mother-of-pearl inlay or gold and black lacquer work, multicolored tiled roofs, and enormous bronze or brightly decorated statues.
You will marvel at the Dusit Maha Prasat, with its four-tier tiled roofs and magnificent seven-tiered golden spire. You'll learn about history, Buddhist architecture, and mythical creatures, and enjoy strolling through the beautiful grounds with an amazing collection of ancient topiaries.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Wat Phra Kaew, is part of the Royal Grand Palace and is considered the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. Carved from one large piece of jade, the 24-inch Emerald Buddha sits under a canopy, on a gilded pedestal in one of three outfits of gold, which are changed by the king at the start of each new season–summer, rainy, and winter.
