Although partly destroyed by an earthquake, the majestic chedi of Wat Chedi Luang still stands at a height of 60m (compared with its original 90m) and is still the tallest chedi in Chiang Mai. The staircase is guarded by two terrifying, monumental naga (legendary serpents whose three heads represent man’s pride, ignorance and intolerance), and the stupa is supported by a row of caryatid elephants. Also of interest is the giant Buddha, the 15C Phra Attharot, which can be seen in the wihan.
