Amazed by the luxury of the Siamese court during his visit here with Louis XIV’s ambassador in 1685, the French historian Nicolas Gervaise declared that “Lopburi is to Siam what Versailles is to France”. Since then, the appearance of this large garrison town has obviously changed somewhat, with its busy traffic and maze of avenues. A former holiday residence of the royal family, the city has nonetheless retained some fine examples of its illustrious past, which are best appreciated by visiting the old town on foot. The town’s temples are particularly interesting.
