The pride and joy of Phetchaburi, Wat Yai Suwannaram, a 17C temple restored two centuries later under the Chakri dynasty, is well worth a detour to admire the sumptuous wall paintings in the ubosot, the chapel used for the ordination of monks, which depict in great detail daily life in the 18C (the end of the Ayutthaya period). This wat is also renowned for the attractive proportions of its buildings, crowned with finely sculpted wooden roofs: in particular, note the sala (a pavilion used for rest) brought back from Ayutthaya.
