Situated on the banks of the River Nan, Phitsanulok, an old town of the kingdom of Siam, has been rebuilt since it was damaged by fire in 1960. The town has nonetheless retained a certain charm, thanks to its floating shops and houses and its night market which extends along the river and where you can sample some of the region’s specialities, such as thao mai luai (fried vegetables). The town is proud to house one of the most venerated Buddhas in Thailand, a gilded bronze masterpiece of Sukhothai art in its Phra Si Ratana Mahatat temple.
