Mahdia is a small fishing port full of charm, with an old fort (borj el-Kebir) overlooking the sea and a maritime cemetery dotted with a disorderly array of white tombstones. With its brightly coloured boats bobbing up and down near the rocks, and freshly caught fish and octopus attracting crowds of onlookers on the quayside, Mahdia lives according to the rhythms and bounty of the sea. Tunisia’s leading fishing port, the town has resisted the advances of mass tourism, although this situation is slowly changing as the area occupied by hotels continues to expand.
