Monastir has for a long time played an important role in the intellectual and religious life of the country thanks to the influence of its magnificently restored ribat. It was also the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of independent Tunisia. The influence of this strong-willed man in the struggle against French colonisation is still evident in the city, where the medina and a number of its religious sites now stand alongside modern buildings and extensive avenues.
