The second most important museum in Tunisia, the Sousse Museum is housed in part of the old kasbah in the upper section of the medina. Visitors who may have missed the mosaics in the Bardo Museum have a second chance to admire fine mosaics here, set in peaceful and attractive surroundings. The most beautiful mosaics come from the catacombs (the Catacombs of the Good Shepherd are open to the public) situated a few miles away. Discovered in the late 19C, these catacombs are some of the largest of the ancient world, along with those in Rome, Naples and Syracuse.
