Tataouine : Michelin's recommendations
The name Tataouine evokes “the end of the world”. It certainly lived up to its name for French convicts enlisted in the light infantry battalions of the Africa Corps, the “bat d’Af” garrisoned in Tataouine, founded under the protectorate to ensure the pacification of southern Tunisia. To the south, the area enclosed by the borders of Algeria and Libya is a desert that covers almost a third of Tunisia’s total land mass. Tataouine’s lethargy is briefly punctuated by its market, held on Mondays and Thursdays. Its limited number of hotels provide a comfortable base from which to explore the local ksour.
