As a result of the date trade, Tozeur was once an important staging post on the caravan route across the Sahara. It also happens to stand in the middle of one of the world’s most beautiful oases. The numerous springs that irrigate this haven of greenery have enabled the town to earn the majority of its income from agriculture. Unfortunately, the huge expansion of tourism (which has stolen the workforce needed to work on the land), the construction of tourist developments that require huge amounts of water (such as an 18-hole golf course), and the poor management of this precious resource could endanger this mini paradise.
