One of the busiest streets in Tunis, avenue Habib Bourguiba crosses the new town from the port to the medina. The central tree-lined promenade is dotted with Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings which are typical of the colonial period, such as the façade of the National Theatre, St-Vincent-de-Paul Cathedral and the former Résidence Générale. There are also plenty of cafés here, which are popular meeting places for locals and which provide the ideal backdrop in which to sit and soak up the atmosphere of this busy avenue.
