Site of Utica : Michelin's recommendations
The ancient city of Utica, which was first a Punic settlement and then occupied by the Romans, is nowadays situated 12km from the sea in the cereal plain of the Medjerda although it was once a port. Founded, according to Pliny the Elder in the 12C BC, three centuries before Carthage, it has always remained in the shadow of its younger sibling, which it betrayed in favour of Rome. The necropolis is the main vestige from the Punic era, while the House of Cascades, House of the Historic Capitals and the House of the Hunt were built under the Romans. A museum, located 1km from the site, displays a collection of pottery, jewellery, masks and statues.
