Situated at the end of a peninsula, Çesme is the garden and “green lung” of Izmir. Popular with wealthy locals at weekends, the town has seen a spate of construction over the past few years, with concrete villas sprouting up everywhere. However, Çesme remains a pleasant and tranquil fortified town that overlooks a narrow cove and is protected by an impressive Genoese fort. Head away from the seafront and you’ll come into the old section of Çesme, a maze of bustling narrow streets lined with elegant white façades adorned with wrought-iron balconies.
