Foça stands on the site of ancient Phocaea, inhabited by the Phocaeans who founded Marseille. Nowadays a popular tourist destination, Foça has two harbours split in two by a headland. On one side, Kucuk Deniz (the “small sea”) has all the attractive traits of a typical old port, where elegant whitewashed Greco-Ottoman houses look down on the colourful scene of fishing boats; and on the other, Buyuk Deniz (the “large sea”), home to several tourist complexes. The islands off the coast are home to a few of the last remaining monk seals in the Mediterranean.
