Turkey is a secular nation, but away from the beaches it is very conservative and you should dress accordingly. As a general guideline, shoulders and knees should be covered at all times for both genders. The wearing of shorts away from beaches is not recommended for both men and women as it will restrict your entry into buildings of a religious nature. Loose, lightweight, and long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot climate.
