Grand Bazaar, Istanbul
: Michelin's recommendations
The city’s covered Grand Bazaar is an extraordinary world all of its own with some equally extraordinary statistics: 2 000 shops, 60 restaurants, mosques, fountains and banks, all of which are located in a maze of vaulted alleyways teeming with goods for sale. Here you’ll breathe in the scent of leather mixed in with those of hookah pipes and apple-flavoured tea, and admire a glittering array of jewellery, shiny trinkets and brightly coloured kilims. Hunting for bargains here can almost induce a drunken giddiness, and conducting a purchase is a ceremony that involves some long and hard bargaining! In between your shopping exertions, why not try a traditional Turkish Delight in one of the bazaar’s many tea shops.
