With mountain roads overlooking a turquoise sea, flocks of sheep dozing on the tarmac and mules laden with goods, the scene could not be more typical. It is in these landscapes of ancestral Turkey that the acropolis of Assos is situated, crowned by its ancient citadel and the village of Behramkale. The temple of Athena (530 BC), rows of seats from a ruined theatre, impressive ramparts (400 BC) and other remains are a strong reminder of the heyday of Assos, a citadel founded 27 centuries ago by the Greeks, occupied by the Romans, then conquered by the Ottomans in 1330, before finally falling into decline.
