At an altitude of 1 000m, Central Anatolia is characterised by its steppe of endless horizons and its barren, ochre soil which has a hypnotising effect but is of little use for agriculture. These landscapes are imprinted on the collective memory of the Turkish people. The Seljuks, nomadic Turkish-speaking tribes originally from central Asia, fought decisive battles here against the Byzantines. Konya was their first conquest, and the present Turkish capital, Ankara, also stands in these unique undulating landscapes, which are dotted with turquoise lakes and soaked in history.
