Church of St Nicholas
Church of St Nicholas
: Michelin's recommendations
Born in Patara in AD 300, St Nicholas became Bishop of Myra, then over the following centuries patron saint of children and merchants. His church (8C, but later remodelled) stands in the suburbs of Kale, surrounded by an attractive small garden. The church interior is decorated with marble and colonnades which contrast with the dry-stone walls. The graceful vaulted chapels, numerous mosaics and rustic charm of the fragments of primitive frescoes make this a delightful place to visit. The so-called sarcophagus of St Nicholas is also a moving sight, even though we now know that the tomb is not that of the saint.
