In the waterfront Konak district, you will come to the Clocktower Square, a huge esplanade battered by the wind and fronted by modern buildings. Standing opposite the city hall is Izmir’s emblem, the clock tower (Saat Kulesi), built in 1901. Along with the small Konak mosque (1748) nearby, with its attractive enamelled ceramic tiles, it is one of the few remains from the Ottoman Smyrna.
