The Döner Kümbet, one of the most beautiful mausoleums in Kayseri, stands in the centre of a small square surrounded by watermelon sellers. Known as the “turning mausoleum” (döner in Turkish) because of its cylindrical shape, the structure bears an inscription above the door which states that it was built in 1275 to house the tomb of a princess. The external decor is of striking quality, with its blind arcades embellished by long bands of geometrical and animal motifs.
