The collections in the city’s archaeological museum are worth a visit, although the most interesting rooms are often closed. This is the case with the Hittite collection and the so-called “room of the treasure”, containing a very fine bronze bust of Demeter dating from the 4C BC. Exhibits that can be admired include unusual painted terracotta sarcophagi – original works from the neighbouring city of Clazomenae – as well as statues, mosaics and architectural features from the major sites along the coast (Pergamon, Ephesus and Miletus) and excavations at the agora in Izmir.
