An important Lycian city in the 2C BC, Olympos lies between a creek of white sand and an area of old marshland now planted with flowers and wild vines and crossed by a canalised river. Methane gas once escaped from this marsh, causing spontaneous fires which are thought to have been the origin of the Greek myth of the Chimaera, the monster said to spit fire. Surrounded by this idyllic landscape, the ruins of Olympos (theatre, acropolis, door of a temple), although not very extensive, are charming.
