Friendship Firehouse : Michelin's recommendations
Organized in 1774, the Friendship Fire Company lists among its honorary volunteers statesmen, governors and presidents, including George Washington himself. The current brick firehouse, with its quaint cupola, was completed in 1857. Though the company ceased active fire fighting in the early 1870s, the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Assn. has continued to maintain a ceremonial and supporting function. Now the property of the city, the restored building features a first-floor exhibit room devoted to 18C and 19C fire-fighting equipment, including leather buckets, speaking trumpets and wheeled vehicles. The meeting room on the second floor displays memorabilia relating to the company's social role in the community.
