Old Town, Alexandria traces its beginnings to the early 1700s, when a tobacco warehouse on the waterfront near what is now Oronoco Street spawned a small settlement. In recent decades the Old Town quarter of the city has paid increasing attention to its architectural heritage, fostering an image of genteel provincialism. The city government carefully monitors the appearance of buildings in the historic district, which in 1969 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
