This thriving mix of street vendors, retail outlets, entertainment and dining facilities occupies the site of the city's birth. As Atlanta grew as a railroad center, the ground level became congested with tracks. To accommodate street traffic, viaducts were built over the tracks, and commerce shifted to the upper levels. In 1990 developers revitalized the underground, re-creating six blocks of early saloons, shops and restaurants. Anchoring the south end of the complex is the 1869 Georgia Railroad Freight Depot.
