The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
: Michelin's recommendations
Anchoring the Civil Rights District, this self-directed museum and memorial (1992, J. Max Bond Jr.) guides visitors through a series of engrossing multimedia and three-dimensional exhibits that bring the drama and tumult of the American civil rights movement to vivid, sometimes frightening, life. Exhibits are in chronological order. The permanent exhibition galleries are complemented by temporary and traveling exhibits of art and culture, organized along themes of civil rights and Birmingham's role in civil-rights history.
