Monticello
: Michelin's recommendations
The only house in the US on the UNESCO World Heritage List of international treasures, Thomas Jefferson's remarkable "essay in architecture" stands as an enduring monument to the guiding spirit of the birth of America. An accomplished statesman, musician, draftsman and naturalist, Jefferson began building his home in 1768, on the little mountain (:Monticello") that commands views of the countryside. A visitor center at the base of the mountain offers exhibits and a film. Tours of the house begin in the entrance hall, which Jefferson used as a museum. Outside, visitors are free to explore the all-weather passageway underneath the house, leading to the wine cellar and kitchen.
