EL Ideas is a complete original, right down to the setting. It is in the kind of neighborhood that doesn't shackle a deeply creative chef to high-maintenance crowds (read: desolate and edgy). The staff is hip, and their welcome is warm. Just a half-wall separates tables from the kitchen; also get to know the chefs as they personally present the dish they each created. Much can be said to derail the pleasure of eating here. Some even think that this kitchen is full of itself. But yes, these cooks are really that talented and the point is that you need to eat here to fully understand its relaxed vibe and free-flowing format. El Ideas is a conceptual restaurant to be reckoned with. This is clear from the thrice-cooked potato, scrambled egg, and dill aïoli beneath osetra caviar through to the blackberry pâté de fruits and mini-oreo mignardise. Other courses might include a roasted garlic roll stuffed with oozing smoked raclette, strips of bacon-like sturgeon over thick soubise, topped with pickled onions and sunflower shoots; or neat peanut macarons filled with foie gras mousse. Finish with a quenelle of applejack cider sorbet and a hot, sugar-dusted donut with caramelized yogurt sauce.
