The British royal pie, a rarity in Chicago, has found a home at tiny Pleasant House Bakery—and though U.K. expats go gaga for their savory meat pies, carnivorous Midwesterners can learn to love them too. The jovial staff welcomes everyone at the walk-up counter, bringing traditional British delicacies to marble-topped tables in this wedge-shaped dining room. A meal of a Jamaican meat, or steak and ale pie wrapped in all-butter crust with a side of shucked green peas massaged in butter and fresh mint couldn't be more proper. Until, of course, you add a plate of crispy spud chips tossed with cheese, chopped ribeye, and gravy; or banoffee pie and snickerdoodles for dessert. Reservations are only accepted for Sunday high tea with sandwiches and scones.
