The AIC is one of the great museums of the world and the preeminent arts institution of the Midwest. Its collections span 5,000 years and draw on the cultures of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, and its collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings is one of the largest and most important outside France, including masterpieces by Monet, Caillebotte, Seurat, Picasso, and Cassat. The institute expanded in 2009 with the addition of a new glass and limestone addition by Renzo Piano with on the northeast side.
