Designed by H.H. Richardson in 1886, the Glessner House revolutionized domestic American architecture with its open floor plan and plain facade. John Glessner, a manufacturer of farm implements, commissioned the house at a time when labor unrest alarmed the city's wealthy residents. In response, the architect designed the mansion like a fortress by turning its back to the street and including a secure inner courtyard.
