Prairie Avenue Historic District Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
The area south of downtown ranks today among the hippest, fastest-growing residential sections of the city. Though it seems like a modern phenomenon, it all started along Prairie Avenue after the Chicago Fire in 1871. Here on "Millionaire's Row" lived industrial and commercial leaders Marshall Field and George Pullman, among others, in mansions designed by famous architects. For a while, Prairie Avenue was the city's most fashionable address. By 1966 industrial growth had caused the demolition of most of Prairie Avenue's mansions; a Chicago Landmark District was created in 1979 to preserve the remaining homes.
