This inner-city campus has generated much controversy since it was first conceived as a commuter school to serve the throngs of students poised to enter college in the mid-1960s. Inspired by the movement known as Brutalism, the hulking concrete and brick exoskeletons of the buildings are punctuated by slitlike vertical windows. Netsch included a layer of "express" walkways above those at grade level, all converging at the campus' center. A 1992 decision led to the amphitheater and elevated walkways being demolished, and the lecture halls re-roofed. The Great Court has also been redesigned with greenery, colored stone and wooden benches.
