Encompassing 100sq mi in the Gulf of Mexico, the park protects the small cluster of reef islands known as the Dry Tortugas. One of these, Garden Key, is the site of Fort Jefferson, the largest coastal stronghold built by the US in the 19C. The half- to day-long excursions to the island allow time for touring the fort, as well as diving, snorkeling and fishing in the surrounding park waters.
