: Michelin's recommendations
One of Key West's most legendary figures, novelist Ernest Hemingway (1889-1961) spent his most productive years on the island. Hemingway and his second wife, Pauline, wintered here in the late 1920s, and in 1931 they purchased this gracious stucco home in the town Hemingway dubbed "the St. Tropez of the poor." In a studio above the carriage house, "Papa" wrote such classics as Death in the Afternoon (1932) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Other local Hemingway landmarks include "Papa's" favorite hangout, Sloppy Joe's Bar (201 Duval St.), and Rick's Blue Heaven (729 Thomas St.), a former brothel (now a cafe) where Hemingway attended boxing matches.
