One of the largest National Historic Districts on the National Register, Old Town boasts diverse architecture, from simple wood-frame vernacular Conch houses and gingerbread-trimmed Victorians to imported Bahama houses and gracious Classical Revival mansions built by transplanted New England seafarers in the 19C. Among the indigenous features added to the latter style, the "eyebrow" is unique. This West Indian element designed to block the tropical sun consists of eaves that partly overhang second-story windows, resembling a brow over squinting eyes.
