One of Miami-Dade County's most striking buildings, the tower sits on the northern edge of downtown. The 1925 structure housed the Miami News, the city's first newspaper, for more than 30 years before it was transformed into a federal processing center for Cuban refugees in 1962. As a symbol of liberation for the Cuban community, it was renamed "Freedom Tower." In 1997 it was purchased by the family of exiled Cuban revolutionary leader Jorge Mas Canosa.
