Sanford L. Ziff Jewish Museum of Florida : Michelin's recommendations
Housed in the restored, copper-domed Beth Jacob Orthodox Synagogue (1936, Henry Hohauser), this cultural institution opened in 1995 to display art and artifacts relating to more than 230 years of Jewish history in the Sunshine State. A 10-year study of Jews in Florida led to some 10,000 artifacts, photographs and mementos being combined in the MOSAIC exhibit, which became the museum's core collection in 1996. In addition, related temporary exhibits rotate three times a year. Light streams into the large domed room through eight colorful stained-glass windows. At the eastern end stands a marble ark, crowned by a carved Torah supported by lions. A continuously running video illustrates the struggles and achievements encountered by Jews since they first landed on the Florida coast with Ponce de León to escape persecution in Spain.
