Montgomery : Michelin's recommendations

A pleasant, well-kept city on the banks of the Alabama River, Montgomery was claimed by the Spanish, the French, the British and the Creek Indian nation over the course of its history since 1540. A busy regional marketplace and transportation hub in the 19C, Montgomery became Alabama's capital in 1846. It survived the Civil War largely unscathed, then prospered in the early 20C thanks to its lumber and textile mills. Today a busy, modern metropolis, Montgomery has numerous sights related to Alabama state history and the city's role in the Confederacy. The city supports a highly regarded Shakespeare festival troupe.
