Water flows ceaselessly over the names of 40 civil rights martyrs engraved on the smooth granite top of this round, table-like monument. The last entry, dated April 4, 1968, is the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Designed by Maya Lin (famous for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC), the Montgomery memorial's back wall echoes Dr. King's use of the Biblical verse Amos 5:24: "...until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream".
