After the Civil War, the city emerged as an educational, religious and cultural center, touting itself as the "Athens of the South" and celebrating its rebirth with a Centennial Exposition in 1879. A full-sized replica of the Parthenon, complete with a 42ft concrete statue of Athena, was built for this exposition.
