Now owned by the National Park Service, Melrose is an authentic antebellum town estate (c.1845) complete with slave quarters and other "dependencies," including the kitchen, stables and privies. A guided tour of the house and grounds informs visitors about the lives of slave owners and the enslaved alike, including the slaves' individualized bell-summoning system and the tragedies linked to a then-innovative lead-lined cistern system.
